What does BTU mean?
BTU stands for British Thermal Unit, and put simply it means how powerful a radiator is, or how much heat it will produce. So, when a radiator advertises it produces 3,000 BTU, this is simply the amount of heat it will produce in your room.
How do I know what BTU I need?
You can use our handy calculator here. You will need to know your room’s Length, Width and Height, and further details like whether your windows are single or double glazed or if you have patio doors or French windows. The calculator will then provide a Minimum BTU figure and a Maximum BTU figure. The minimum number is the absolute lowest amount of BTU the room needs to be warmed comfortably, but we always advise to aim for the higher number to ensure your room is nice and toasty. You can then use this BTU range to begin browsing for radiators.
Jot down your BTU range and keep it in mind when you are looking for a new radiator. If you are looking for more than one radiator for your room, the combined BTU of these new radiators needs to meet the minimum BTU calculated to heat the room properly. If you already have one radiator in the room but are looking for a new one too, it would be a good idea to work out the BTU of your existing radiator too, so you can ensure your new one will provide enough heat when added to your existing one. Which radiators heat the best?
Generally, the more material used in a radiator, the more surface area, which means more heat. You will find that traditional column and cast iron radiators tend to have a higher BTU on average than more modern, slimline designs. This is because there is a lot more surface area in column radiators, and the more material to heat there is, the more warmth the radiator will provide. Another fantastic material to consider when buying a powerful radiator is Aluminium. Aluminium typically produces a higher heat output than steel and is also lighter, ideal for stud walls! Aluminium radiators also tend to have a lower water content, which is efficient and could help you save on energy bills in the long-run.

HOW DO I KNOW WHAT HEAT I NEED?
Use our BTU Calculator to work out the total heat your room will need, then look for radiator sizes that produce the same BTU.
WHAT IF I HAVE MORE THAN ONE RADIATOR IN THE ROOM?
The combined BTU of both radiators needs to match or exceed the minimum BTU requirement for your room to get the heat you need.
WHAT MATERIAL IS THE BEST FOR RADIATORS?
This is will vary depending on your needs. Aluminium is a great producer of heat but tends to cool down quicker, steel, stainless steel and cast iron also produce great heat and tend to stay warmer a little longer, with cast iron retaining its heat for the longest!
SHOULD I GET A SINGLE OR DOBLE RADIATOR?
This will depend on the space you have and your heating needs. Double radiators always produce more heat than their single counterparts but do have a slightly wider depth. If you don't have a lot of room on your wall, a double radiator in a smaller width might work better for you than a single, wider option.
