How To Find The best Radiator For Your Heating

Finding the best radiator for your home

Finding the perfect radiator for your home can depend on several factors, including the size of your room, your heating needs, and your personal style. Here are some steps you can take to find the perfect radiator:

Measure the size of the room

Measure the length and width of the room to determine the necessary heat output for the radiator. This will help you choose a radiator with the appropriate BTU (British Thermal Unit) rating for your space. Use our BTU calculator to find the BTU of the room your new radiator will go in.

The BTU calculator will give you a low estimate and high estimate – we recommend buying a radiator with a BTU close to your high estimate, as this will deliver the heat output you need. You can always turn a radiator down if it is too warm, but you can’t turn an underperforming radiator up.

Measure the size of your current radiators

When fitting a new radiator, it is helpful to try and match the size of the previous radiator so your plumber won’t need to do a lot of pipework alteration to make it fit.

Measure the height and width of your radiator. Measure the pipe centres (the width of your radiator including the valves on either side).

Look for radiators with a similar width so they will fit in the space correctly. Look at the positions of the valves – are they underneath your current radiator or either side?

All of these measurements will help you get an idea of what size radiator you need, what heat output you need, and what kind of valves you need.

Consider your heating needs

Think about when and how often you’ll be using the heating in the room, and what kind of temperature you want to maintain. This will help you select the right type of radiator, such as electric, hydronic, or towel warmer.

If you require a larger heat output, consider a radiator in a double style. Doubling up the radiator maximises heat output without changing the height and width of your radiator and needing costly pipework alterations.

Decide on the style

Radiators come in a variety of styles, from traditional to modern. Choose a radiator that complements your room’s décor and enhances the overall aesthetic. Even a traditional style like column radiators can be made more modern by using a RAL colour or textured finish.

Ensure the radiator you choose is the perfect size and colour for your needs, made to order radiators or radiators with customer colour finishes cannot be cancelled once ordered and are non-refundable due to their bespoke nature. A designer radiator can be a huge investment so we want to make sure it is perfect for you and your home.

Look for energy-efficient options

Today’s radiator models come with more efficient heating options, such as programmable thermostatic valves and smart technology that can help to save energy and money in the long run. Consider installing TRVs to your new radiator to be more energy efficient.

Installation

Never book your plumber to install your new radiator until you have received it, this will help you avoid having to re-book if your radiator is delayed or must be returned due to damage. Whilst both issues are unlikely, we always suggest waiting until you have received your radiator and are happy with your choice to book your installation.

Consider the installation location and the type of radiator you have chosen and do proper research on the installation process and the cost.

If the pipework needs to be altered, this can be costly. Consider finding a radiator to match the current pipe centre sizes of the one you are replacing.

If you are adding a radiator in a new location – new pipework must be added.
